The Allison Family In Motion.

by Brooke Comer

The focus of the Allison family is physical. So it's no surprise that brothers Michael and Kasper Allison chose to name their Montecito gym "Physical Focus."

With their handsome, healthy physiques, these Pennsylvania natives could easily pass for casual California surfers, but there's nothing laid back about their approach to working out. Walk into their boutique gym early any weekday morning and you can practically inhale the energy, as Michael and Kasper put local celebrities and reclusive financial wizards, plus many regular workout warriors, through their paces. Despite the many high-powered individuals amongst the devoted clientele, it's not who's who, but who's going for it. Any thoughts of elitism in this congenial atmosphere disappear faster than a fat cell.

"It's like 'Cheers,' where everyone knows your name," says Michael. "Don't be surprised if someone shouts it out when you walk in. There's a lot of joking and laughing going on." He adds: "We envisioned a training facility with a personal touch, and a level of care that you don't get in your basic gym." Kasper explains: "It's beyond physical health; it's about challenge." It's also about variety and balance, with all styles of workouts.

The brothers aren't the only Allisons who work at working out. Michael's wife, Jamie, a former tri-athlete, started the organization Moms In Motion, Inc. when she became pregnant with Kate, now 3, to help other mothers stay fit. But Moms In Motion is about developing more than muscles. Its program is divided into four categories: heart (philanthropy), mind (education), body (physical exercise), and soul (social and emotional bond). And now Jamie may add a neo-natal program to the physical exercise category, since she's expecting again. Michael has been putting together some special exercises for her: a combination of light resistance training, easy cardio intervals, yoga and hiking. He also plans to provide his wife's clients with trainers and give them access to Physical Focus to continue their fitness programs.

Kasper's wife Daven, has also found success in the athletic field. As a pro volleyball player ranked in the top 20 in the country, she is often on the road of the AVP tour.

Despite the hectic schedules, the Allisons find time to spend with extended family. "We'll all get together for a family volleyball game or go surfing," says Jamie. "That's when we really get physical!"
