Getting Back into the Groove

Getting back into running after having a baby

I have been wanting to post a blog for weeks, but as those of you with three young kids know, it is crazy trying to get anything done.  I am a mom of a 5 year, 3 year and 2 month old and I am trying to figure out how to juggle everything right now.  As crazy as it all is (I am bouncing a gurgling little one on my lap as I type), there has been one thing that has kept me sane- running.  I could not wait for the day that the doc said it was okay to get back out there and sweat a bit, after a year of keeping a low heart rate, taking it easy and giving my body a break.  That was great for a time, but now I was longing for a good sweat, to feel sore the day after a run, to push myself as hard as I could.  My first run was humbling- I made it a few blocks and then my lungs were burning and I had to stop and walk. Since I had come back to running after pregnancy twice before, I should have remembered how hard it is, but all I had been dreaming about was the in shape me and how that felt.  Boy was I wrong.

There have been a few days that I have wanted to come home mid-run, a few mornings when I haven't wanted to get out of bed for a run after a night of nursing, a few days that I just wanted to walk instead of push myself, but overall running has been my sanity during this exciting and crazy time.  I look so forward to getting to run with our team on Saturdays and I feel like the incredible and inspirational ladies that I run with are the voice in my head getting me through.  I am still humbled every time I run by how hard running can be, but also I am loving having the challenge of getting back to my old running self.  I keep going to the Carlsbad 1/2 Marathon website and getting ready to click on that button: "Register Now!".  But somehow I haven't quite been able to bring myself to committing just yet.   Can I run a 1/2 in January??  I know it wouldn't be pretty, but maybe that is what I need to keep the motivation going.  I will keep you posted...
