Homeless children face tremendous stigmatization; as a result, they are more likely to be placed in special education classes and to drop out of school. Being prepared with a backpack and the supplies boosts a child's self-esteem and helps him feel like a regular kid.

Please donate your gently used running shoes sizes 2 and up for these athletes with Down Syndrome. Many of the athletes are not able to afford running shoes. The vast number of athletes that have Down Syndrome are in need of smaller size running shoes, and the adults wear kid sizes because their feet have not fully developed.

About the U-District Foundation
U-District Physical Therapy and Institute of Sports Performance is proud to announce the launch of the U-District Foundation, our non-profit organization. The U-District Foundation was established as way for us to give back to the community that has demonstrated profound commitment to our success over the past five years. Promoting health and wellness through the U-District Foundation is a fundamental way we can serve our community. Our goal, through the foundation, is to encourage kids to live healthy lives and inspire them to dream great dreams!
As a business that was founded on several core values, including service and servant leadership, we believe access to healthy living should be available to all area youth. The U-District Foundation will offer free youth fitness camps, sports training scholarships for individuals and teams, educational conferences for area coaches, as well as provide assistance to local schools' physical education programs.
We are also excited to partner with Reach for the Future, a local non-profit organization that provides tutoring, mentoring, and college tuition to a group of students currently in third grade. We will be providing fitness camps and education programs to encourage healthy living as we follow these children throughout their K-12 education. October: All about Second Base! "Can You Spare Some Change for Breast Cancer?"
Our "Change for Change" efforts resulted in a $70 donation to Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital to purchase equipment for the Long Island facility. Keep in mind this was our first month and we had a handful of active Moms! October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be sure you booked your annual mammography, if you haven't,
do it now!
November: Rocky Point Soup Kitchen!
Continue to bring any non-perishable item to each practice. To date, a shopping cart full of non-perishable items was delivered to the bare shelves of the Rocky Point Soup Kitchen. Donations will be continually delivered to the Soup Kitchen each week. Next we put on our aprons and baked dessert. Dessert for 100 people was delivered to the Rocky Point Soup Kitchen for Thursday, November 12th dinner. Thank you for everyone's overwhelming generosity! There was so much extra dessert that everyone got to take a care package.
MIM, along with First Friends Day Care, collected $220 for Jo Mara Cecere and her family. Jo Mara was the cross-fit trainer who worked with us. Unfortunately her husband is out of work and their son, Michael, has been recently hospitalized and diagnosed with epilepsy. Further tests are being done as they also found a small mass on the right side of his brain. This donation helps them offset the rising cost!
Christmas Cards for Noah - MIM has identified a five-year old boy named Noah who is in the last stages neuroblastoma cancer. The family is celebrating Christmas next week and is trying to get as many cards as possible for Noah from all over the world. Please send a card to Noah from you and your family. His address is:

Our Mission:
Our mission is to improve the lives of our neighbors by identifying both those in need and those willing to share their gifts, and coordinating the interchange in a compassionate, confidential manner. Project G.R.A.C.E. is a non-demoninational organization.
Our Roots:
The original focus, of what has become Project G.R.A.C.E., was to share our gifts during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter seasons. Members of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Scarborough, Maine, were asked to help provide presents and food baskets for neighbors who were struggling. Requested items for Long Creek Youth Development Center (an incarceration facility for juveniles), homeless shelters, nursing homes, CASA (a group home for severely developmentally and physically challenged young adults) and children of prisoners were also collected and distributed.
Most of the recipients of these efforts were referred to us by employees of the Scarborough School System. Nurses, social workers and teachers are able to identify families that are struggling, because they work with the children of the families. They notice when a child wears the same dirty clothes every day. They notice the ones who don't have a coat, boots or ski pants. They recognize when a child is struggling because of poor eyesight, but doesn't have glasses because their parents can't afford to buy them, and are too embarrassed or proud to ask for help. In the past the school personnel did not have many resources to turn to, to help meet these needs. Through the efforts of the adopt-a-family program, we became aware of these situations, and decided it was time to respond.
We were quite surprised to learn there are people in our town who are virtually homeless, and others who are in need of items we all take for granted. We know of families with 2 to 6 people who are living in motel rooms on Route 1. Some live in tents at campgrounds during the warmer months. Some of these families do not seek assistance. Others do receive some form of assistance from state or local government programs, but we've learned that what these programs provide is limited.
Qualified families can receive up to $500 per month for housing, when small apartments are renting for closer to $800 per month for 2 bedrooms, without utilities. Food stamps can not be used for nonfood items, which include diapers, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and cleaning supplies. There is no clothing allowance. This makes it very difficult for families with growing children.
When the decision was made to try to do something about these shortfalls, the adopt-a-family program was expanded to a year-round, town-wide effort. The name was changed to Project G.R.A.C.E. (Granting Resources and Assistance through Community Effort), to better reflect our focus. Through the generosity of Sam Kelley of MBI Trailers, Inc., we were given furnished office space, totally rent-free. Fr. Morrison agreed to have St. Max pay for our phone and other overhead expenses. Therefore, 100% of the donations made to Project G.R.A.C.E. are used to meet clients' needs.
We believe this approach has contributed to our ability to attract the resources needed to meet the needs of people who come to our attention. We currently have 16 major sponsors, all who have given a total of at least $1000 during the past year. Other donations have come from fundraising projects we have sponsored (which are described on the Activities Sheet), anonymous donors, businesses, civic groups, fundraising efforts by students, and other groups and individuals throughout the greater Scarborough area. In 2002 we incorporated as a Maine non-profit corporation, and as of July 1, 2002, we have 501(c)(3) tax exempt status with the IRS.
In an effort to make the best use of the donations we receive, we have investigated other agencies. One of our major goals is to avoid duplication of services. We are continually learning about what is available from other programs. We have a Resources Coordinator who maintains current information and brochures on groups that provide what our clients typically need. We educate our clients about these resources, and refer them whenever feasible. Therefore, the needs we end up meeting or those that are not being met by others.
So, to summarize, Project G.R.A.C.E. is an organized effort to mobilize our town to help people who are in need. We orchestrate the exchange of resources from those that have and are willing to share, to those who need and are willing to receive. Because of the dedication of dozens of volunteers, and the continuous generosity of many, the organization has become a vibrant part of our community, with the potential of doing even more in the future.Help

The United Methodist Free Store provides clothing and household items to low-income families in a hospitable atmosphere that affirms the self-worth of each individual. More than 30,000 famlies have become members of the Free Store since we opened our doors in January 1999. For every dollar donated to the Free Store nineteen dollars are returned to the community.Help

It may be a child in need of a warm coat in the winter, a student needing a school uniform, or a young adult going to his first day of work.

The mission of SuperFood Drive is to provide healthy foods (SuperFoods) to low income communities nation-wide. Through individual participation and community collaboration, SuperFood Drive aims to increase the nutrient-density of foods that are donated in food drives to ensure that all individuals have access to a healthy meal.
Individuals typically respond to food drives by pulling cans from the back of pantries. SuperFood Drive's aim is to provide nutritious SuperFoods to the those who would not otherwise have access to them, and as a result, educate both the individuals donating, and those receiving, about the health benefits of nutrient-dense SuperFoods.

Our Mission
It is the mission of Caring Unlimited to work with the community to end domestic violence in York County. This includes providing support and safe haven to women, their children and men whose lives are affected by domestic abuse in a manner that honors their essential worth, nurtures their inherent strengths and respects their right of self-determination.
Our Philosophy
We, the Caring Unlimited Board, Staff and Volunteers, believe that people often use power in a coercive way to control or dominate others. This abuse of power violates the rights of others. The distribution of power and authority in our society particularly encourages the abuse and oppression of women and children. We recognize that sexism, racism, age and class prejudice, homophobia, and able-bodyism are used to oppress others in the same way that acts of violence are used to oppress women and children.
Violence against women and children takes many forms--physical, verbal, sexual and emotional. Women and children are most frequently abused in their own homes, by members of their own families. Even women who are not direct targets of violence are affected, intimidated or limited by all violence against women and all members of society are harmed by the cultural acceptance of this violence.
Battered women have the ability and right to control their own lives, but may need support and information to make decisions not clouded by terror or coercion. Providing battered women with support and information empowers us/them to reclaim our/their inherent personal power.
Battered women are not responsible for the batterer's abusive behavior--the batterer is responsible. Because violence against women is sanctioned by society, by many of our institutions and by the media, the batterer's behavior is encouraged. To prevent and eradicate violence against women and children, it is essential that societal behaviors and values be changed. Our entire community must take responsibility for ending this violence. Social consequences, including strong legal penalties, are necessary to change the batterer's behavior.
Our communities must make it clear that violence against women and children is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

We will train for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on June 27.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

Our Philosophy: It's simple: The ocean can no longer be used as a dump. Heal the Ocean is attacking all sources of ocean pollution.
Our Course of Action: We follow a basic premise: instead of lobbying the government for action on ocean-pollution issues, we study the problem ourselves and recommend practical solutions.
We undertake scientific studies to identify sources of pollution - from leaking sewer pipes, offshore sewage disposal, leaking coastal landfills or septic systems.
We test for viruses in the ocean, creeks and groundwater to determine if human sources of pollution are present, and what are the likely sources. In cooperation with Santa Barbara County, Heal the Ocean pioneered both the use of environmental DNA testing and virus testing in the local area.
We have commissioned numerous engineering studies and environmental assessments to determine the cost and feasibility of replacing septic systems, upgrading sewage treatment plants and installing stormwater treatment technology.
We have found that once the problem is known and cleanup costs are understood, the public is eager to move forward with cleanup, and more willing to pay the price.Help

- Santa Barbara Cycling Team Spring 2009Mission
A food bank is a non-profit organization working to eliminate hunger by providing food, education and other resources to a network of hunger-relief charities and their communities. The mission of the Foodbank is to feed hungry people by obtaining surplus food and distributing it to member agencies who serve a wide spectrum of individuals and families. During 2008, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County distributed nearly 8 million pounds of food from two warehouse locations in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. The Foodbank depends upon community-minded individuals, businesses and corporations for support. The surplus and donated food comes from many sources; over 400 donors contributed food and other commodities during 2007, in addition to the thousands of pounds of food collected through local food drives. Locally, food items such as bread, produce, dairy and deli items are donated daily by retail stores. Local growers and packers donate fresh fruit and vegetables. Individuals, businesses, and community groups, contribute through food drives. Throughout the State, food banks share donations and trade for items they cannot obtain in their area. Surplus food and other items collected by store chains are transported to the Foodbank warehouses, sorted by volunteers, and distributed to member agencies.Help

This season we are supporting the Nevada Chapter of D.A.R.E which is Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The program not only teaches children to refuse drugs but how to refuse drugs. It sends highly trained police officers into classrooms to teach kids grades K-9. Evaluations of the program have found that kids will view drug use as unacceptable, have improved decision making skills and possess a lower likelihood of ever using drugs.Help
D.A.R.E was cut from the 2008-09 budget and need our help providing supplies. Las Vegas MIM will hold a fundraising event in early February and proceeds will benefit this Nevada chapter. We will then run the 5k event titled "Defeat It" where proceeds will also benefit the program.
