I've been hesitant to write my story but after hearing Cathy and Barbara Ireland speak about breast cancer I felt inspired and decided to go for it. The end of the year 2000 and the first 6 months of 2001 were not such great times for me. In October 2000 I ruptured my left posterior tibialis muscle and tendon - the main tendon that holds up your arch and keeps your foot from over pronating.
That December-28 to be exact I underwent a tendon transfer and calcaneal osteotomy- they transferred 2 flexor tendons from my toes and attached them to my posterior tibialis muscle and moved my ankle bone over! I was "non weight bearing " for 6 weeks- in a wheelchair!
Then it took another 6 weeks to learn to walk again. 3 weeks after my surgery my best friend, hero, most admired person my mother lost her battle with breast cancer. The loss of my walking temporally inconvenienced me but the loss of my mother has been by far the hardest, saddest and most emotional experience I have had to go through.
My mom was my lifeline she was always there when I needed her. To know that I cannot pick up the phone and call her still haunts me and is still difficult to deal with. I think about her every day and that is what has encouraged me to join Moms In Motion. I know my mom is looking down from heaven and cheering me on. Especially since she knows how terrified of the ocean I am .
